FIELD TRIP NEWS:
Our field trip was a HUGE success!  We learned a lot about the Kid's Food Basket organization and unpacked over 8,000 packages for Nutter Butter Cookies.  The kids worked extremely hard for a great cause.  It was incredible to see their teamwork and determination.  We also have over 1,000 Sack Supper bags that we will decorate at Bauer to donate back to Kid's Food Basket.  We are hoping other Bauer students will help us too.  Don't miss the pictures below of our time at Kid's Food Basket and the bowling alley!
Thank you to all of the parents that joined us for the day!  We loved spending the day with you!!!

Also, we donated 85 items to Kid's Food Basket just from our classroom!  Thank you for all of the donations of crackers, cereal, and pretzels.  It will all be put to good use.  We saw exactly how it will be used today!

READING:
We continued to read fairy tales this week.  As readers, we read to determine the author's message (the most important lesson the author tried to show throughout the story).  Here is our extensive list of lesson we learned as we read a variety of fairy tales.

MATH:
Next week we will spend two days reviewing for our Unit 6 Math test.  The final assessment will be on Wednesday, May 2.  This assessment will cover picture graphs and bar graphs, telling time to the nearest five minute interval, distinguishing the difference between AM and PM, one step word problems, and two step word problems.  Please look for a review test coming home at the beginning of next week.

Field Trip Permission Slip:
If you have not turned in your child's permission slip and $3.50, please do so by next week.  If the cost of the field trip is a problem, please let me know!

Field Trip Chaperones:
We have an abundance of volunteers to chaperone our field trip.  That is amazing!  I know your child will LOVE having you join us.  Unfortunately, due to the building size of Kid's Food Basket, we are limited to only 5 chaperones for the morning portion of our field trip.  At this point, we have 11 volunteers.  I will pick 5 names randomly out of a hat to join us at Kid's Food Basket and bowling.  The other 6 volunteers will be able to join us at the Hudsonville Lanes for the lunch and bowling.  Please look for a email coming home this weekend with more details about chaperoning.  Also, all chaperone will need to have a background check completed before Friday.  Some parents filled out the necessary paperwork at the beginning of the year.  If not, please use the link below to get the process started.

READING:
This month we are reading FAIRY TALES!  Students have learned that fairy tales are a type of folktale.  Fairy tales often begin with “once upon a time…” and end with “and they lived happily ever after”.  As we read various fairy tales we will look for many story elements including: royalty, magic, love, far away lands, talking animals, good and bad characters, and the use of the number three or seven.  Next week we will work on comparing fairy tales.  We will make sure to read each fairy tale well enough to compare the characters, problems, and lessons in each story.

WRITING:
We are back to writing small moment narratives for the last time this year!  The students are thrilled to write true, stories about their lives again.   They all have many stories to tell after spring break.   Our main focus next week will be to add sufficient detail to our stories.  We want the reader to be on the edge of their seat as they read our stories.  To do this we will make sure we include strong feelings and tell the story bit by bit.

MATH:
This week students collected and represented data on graphs.   We also worked on interpreting the graph to answer questions about the data shown.  We explored the language of comparison problems by using the words same, more, less, and fewer.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month-please have your child wear something blue each Friday for the month of April.

All students have been our leader of the week once this year.  As we wrap up the school year, students will have a chance to be our leader of the week again!  Each week students will nominate a classmate that has shown exceptional leaderships skills.  Many students were nominated this week for following our five classroom rules, being a problem solver, including others, having grit, being kind, and being polite.  After all the votes were submitted, we found out that we had a tie.  Mallory and Nate both received four nominations.  They will share the role for leader of the week next week. Congratulations!

READING:
March was the last month to participate in the Book-It Program.  If you still have your March calendar, please send it in next week.  Thanks!

You will notice a new reading log in your child's SRC book bag.  Instead of a weekly reading requirement, I have set a new reading challenge to last the remainder of the year.   It is my hope that this new challenge will motivate students to continue to read five nights a week or more!  Students are NOT required to complete the challenge in a week.  They may complete the challenge anytime from now until the end of the year.  The challenge requires students to read 8 different books ranging from a chapter book, a picture book, an informational book, a poem, and much more!  Students will also be asked to share their favorite book with the class.  Students will give their favorite book an "Eagle Book Award" that we will make in class.  Small prizes will be given to students that complete the challenge.

Also, you will notice that your child's SRC report is a bit shorter again.  From now on, I will print the report to show all of the quizzes your child has taken since we have returned from Spring Break.  This will help save on paper and help you see their most recent scores a bit easier.

WRITING:
Next week we will begin writing personal narratives for the last time this year.  We will work to write with strong feelings, dialogue, clear transitions, and many details for the reader to picture each part of the small moment.

MATH:
We began a new unit of study.  We are learning to tell time.  You can help your child with this concept with real world examples.  For example, you can point to the clock during supper and say, "We are eating dinner at 5:30.  Is that 5:30 AM or PM?"  In this unit, your child will learn to tell time to the hour, half hour, and five minutes.  We will practice making the time on analog clocks and writing the time digitally.

GROWTH MINDSET:

In this room we don't do EASY!  We make easy happen through HARD WORK and learning!!!

FIELD TRIP NEWS:
Today you will find a couple of papers explaining our upcoming field trip.  We are very excited about our field trip this year as it directly connects to our Social Studies content and our study of community.  We will visit a local business (Hudsonville Lanes) and participate in a community service project at Kid's Food Basket.  I am looking for 5 chaperones on this day.  Please let me know by filling out the field trip note if you are interested.  Our field trip is scheduled for Friday, April 27 from 9:00-2:00.
Also, in correlation to our visit to Kid's Food Basket, we will begin collecting donations to help fill the sack suppers that we will help pack.  We will be collecting pretzels, cheese crackers, and toasted oat cereal for the next two weeks.  Our hope is to have a LARGE donation to offer when we go to Kid's Food Basket.  Thanks in advance for your help and support!!!
