October 23: Newsletter

Today in your child's Friday folder you will find TWO papers that relate to Parent Teacher Conferences.  The first form indicates the day and time for our conference on November 3 or 4.  Please return the bottom section of this form to school by Wednesday, October 28.  If the indicated time does not work, please let me know right away!  The second form is a quick questionnaire for you to fill out.  This questionnaire will help guide our conversation at conferences.  I would greatly appreciate it if this form could be returned next week as well.  Thank you!

Also, you will find one additional homework page in your child's Friday folder this week.  This homework page is connected to our word study lessons and is marked as a take home task at the top of the paper.  Please have your child complete this page at home and return it with his/her math paper by the end of the week.  Your child will most likely have a take home task paper to complete each week throughout the year.

On Thursday, October 29 we will be having a Halloween party!!!  Our party will start with a parade at 2:30.  We would love to have you join us.  The best spot to see the parade is in the gym.  Immediately following the parade, we will have our classroom party.  A HUGE thank you to Michelle Wood for organizing all of the party details. I know there are MANY other parents that have volunteered to help at the party...thank you!

There will be time right before the party for your child to change into their Halloween costume.  Please do not have your child wear a costume in the morning.  If your child needs help with their costume, we will be getting into costumes around 2:10.   Please feel free to come early to help your child with his/her costume.

Synergize is Bauer size!!!

Today we had our 7 Habits assembly!  We learned what the word synergize really means!  Ask your 2nd grader if he/she remembers what the prefix "syn" means and what the suffixe "ize" means.

Also, you may notice a new friendly face in the crowd!  Karson, my daughter, spent the day with us today.  She is a 2nd grader in another district and she wanted to see what 2nd grade at Bauer was all about.  Everyone had fun making a new friend.  I was so excited to introduce her to this amazing group of 2nd graders!!!

Together is better at Bauer!

Today your child brought home his/her new 7 Habits t-shirt!!!  I don't think you will miss it.  The shirts for 2nd grade are BRIGHT pink!!!  We are hoping that all students can wear their habit shirt tomorrow.  We will have an assembly tomorrow morning to see all of the bright colored shirts.  Our assembly will focus on habit #6: Synergize.  We will learn that synergize is Bauer size!  Together is better at Bauer!!!

October 16: Newsletter

In your child's Friday folder you will find a poster for the HUDSONVILLE HOLIDAY PARADE CONTEST.  It is sponsored by the Hudsonville Holiday Parade Committee.  The posters are used to promote the parade.  If your child is interested in entering the contest please have them write their name, school, and grade on the front of the poster.  Your child can use crayons, markers, glue or glitter to decorate the poster.  It is due on Wednesday, October 21, 2015.  Have fun creating!

Also in your child's Friday folder, you will find green math flashcards.  The flashcards are meant to use to practice the "make a 10" strategy while adding.  The picture on the back of each flashcard can help your child explain how to make a 10 to solve.  These cards would make great practice to increase your child's addition fluency.  We also began Xtramath this week in the computer lab.  This computerized program encourages students to practice their addition and subtraction facts.  We will use this program as least once a week at school.  However, it is my hope that your child will be able to practice at home as well!  Please see the corresponding note in your child's Friday folder to get started.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this program.  My goal is for students to use Xtramath 1-3 times each week.

We did it!  The second graders made it to their reading goal.  In class, we have building our reading stamina.  We have been keeping track of how long we can read without giving up or getting distracted.  This week the class read for 30 MINUTES without interruption.  What GREAT readers!  We couldn't resist the chance to CELEBRATE this reading accomplishment.  The students decided how we should celebrate and here is what they decided...a snack, reading fun poems, choosing a new book to add to their book tubs, and extra time to read!
Check out our reading growth!!!

The Book-It program started this month. Please record the number of minutes your child reads each night on the provided Book-It calendar that was sent home in your child's Friday folder.  Second graders should read for 20 minutes a day, 5 nights a week.  If your child reaches this reading goal, they will earn a certificate for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

Go Eagles!

On Friday, we had an assembly to gear up for the homecoming football game.  There was a lot of cheering and excitement.  Some of our 2nd graders even had the chance to cheer and dance with some of the high school students at the pep assembly.
Go EAGLES!
