READING:
March has been a busy month celebrating reading month! We have enjoyed meeting with reading buddies from Mrs. Windeler's class, D.E.A.R. time, dressing up, BINGO and joke day. Keep looking at your March reading calendar at home to prepare your student for events.  Monday is "Dress Like A Movie Character Day"!    The possibilities are almost endless!!!

Keep recording reading minutes on our Weekly Reading Logs!   Thanks!

WRITING:
We have completed our first opinion writing piece about a restaurant, book, movie, popular spot, or video game.  Students challenged themselves to add more convincing details and examples to support their opinions.  Next week we will write another opinion piece on a new topic.

MATH:
We continue to use our addition and subtraction strategies to solve 2-digit and 3-digit equations while solving word problems.  It has taken a lot of perseverance, but their determination has brought much success.  They have a solid understanding of these concepts.  Next week we will apply our learning to comparison word problems and two-step word problems.

GROWTH MINDSET:
Words to encourage a growth mindset...
-You tried really hard on that!
-You never gave up, even when it was hard!
-What a great friend you are!
-I admire the way you...
-It is so nice you value other people's opinions.

Also here are some pictures from Fort Friday!  The students had a blast reading in their forts.  The classroom has never looked this fun!!!

Fort Friday

The class was caught doing something amazing by other Bauer staff members and earned five leader awards.  They were able to choose from a list of rewards.  They decided on Fort Friday!  That means your child can bring a blanket or sheet to make a fort over the desks and tables tomorrow.  Please make sure the blanket or sheet can fit in your child's backpack or can be easily carried to school.  We will spend part of our day reading under our forts.  Your child can also have a flashlight to help them read in their forts.

Today was "dress for a job you'd like to have" day!  In the classroom, we had a future teacher, DJ, doctor, architect, football player, cowgirl, veterinarian, and psychiatrist (specializing in hoarding disorders).  The future is looking bright with this crew!

Reading:
This week we spent time learning about the ways authors of informational texts teach us about various topics that are beyond the regular text.  Students are getting very familiar with these text features and can quickly identify each one.  Next week we will look at the informational text features even further.  It will be our goal to identify many different text features as well as describe how they help us as readers.

Writing:
We will continue with our opinion writing next week.  Students are working to make their writing organized by including transition words (one reason, another reason, for example, also, etc.).  We are also trying to pay attention to the words we use to support our opinions in order to convince the reader of our thoughts and feelings.  Their opinions and reasons are always fun to read.

Math:
We continue to practice 2-digit and 3-digit subtraction and addition.  Next week, we will use our addition and subtraction strategies to solve many different word problems.  We will also learn how we can use the opposite operation to check our equations.  For example, after solving a subtraction equation, students can use addition to check their thinking.  (62-35=27/ 27+35=62)

Growth Mindset:
Strive for PROGRESS, not PERFECTION!

Other News:

Please don't miss the conference slip in your child's Friday folder.  The conference slip indicates the day and time for our coming Parent Teacher Conference.  Please return the slip next week to confirm our conference time.

Thank you for continuing to hand in Box Tops.  Our class turned in the most amount of Box Tops last month and earned a free recess.  The class was very excited!

Reading:
Thank you for attending the Roll Out The Red Carpet For Reading Night last week.  It created a lot of excitement for reading as we enter into reading month.  Please take note of the reading calendar for the month.  We have many fun events planned each week.

Writing:
We have been working on writing opinion writing pieces.  We are writing our opinions about a restaurant, movie, book, popular spot, or video game.  Next week we will write an introduction that includes our opinion and a catchy lead.  We will also begin to write the middle section including reasons to support our opinion with details, examples, and evidence.

Math:
We continue to practice 2-digit and 3-digit subtraction.  Students are confidently using  subtraction strategies to solve.  They are even beginning to check their work using addition.  Some students are using a method called "Ungroup First".  In explaining this method, students use the "hundreds, tens, and ones" language in order to ungroup and subtract.  This shows that they understand the value of each number in the equation.  Other students have become proficient using a number line to subtract while other are decomposing the total (173=100+70+3).  Ask your child to show you how they subtract from any number less than 200!

Growth Mindset:
And you will succeed?
Yes!
You will indeed!
