May 22: Newsletter

Here is our newsletter for the week:

Our wonderful Bauer Parent Club has generously donated new books for the classroom.  The students can’t wait to check them out.  I would love to have these books labeled as SRC books.  If you would be willing to help me label our new books, I would greatly appreciate it!  It would take roughly an hour to get through the books.  Thanks!

We will have field day on Tuesday, June 2 from 1:00-2:30.  We are hoping to have two parent volunteers willing to help run an event on this day.  We would need your help from 12:30-2:45.  This will allow time to set up, run an event, and clean up.  Please let me know if you are interested!  We would GREATLY appreciate it.

This week we started our typing class.  The students are learning so much!  It is so fun to watch their confidence grow as they are learning the correct way to type each key.  Today I have sent home a paper that explains the program we have been using here at school.  It also suggests way that you can have your child practice at home.  I did put a typing link on our blog as well!

If you have not confirmed your Parent Teacher Conference time yet, please do so by Monday.  Thank you!  I look forward to meeting with you in a couple weeks!!!

You will notice that your child has three pages of math homework this week.  Each page is a way for your child to practice solving word problems.  However, please check over homework page 4-21 very carefully.  These problems are two step word problems and require students to do TWO steps to get the correct answer.

From the office:
It is that time of year again when the different illnesses are spreading through the schools.   Some symptoms to watch for are: chills/fever, headaches, skin eruption, runny nose, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, and a sore throat.  When your child shows signs of illness (especially fever, vomiting, diarrhea) it is important to keep him/her home from school for at least 24 hours with no symptoms present.  Please notify the school of the nature of your child's illness. We appreciate all your help with trying to keep everyone healthy!

Other News:
  • We are still looking for 2 more volunteers to help with our classroom Valentine's Day party.  Please let me know if you are interested.
  • Thank you for the donations of Clorox wipes!  I have a feeling we will use them up quickly!  We have a few containers stocked up.  Thank you for the donations.
  • I wanted to give you a heads up about this week's math homework.  I anticipate that it will be more difficult than most other homework pages.  The homework pages have your child subtract from a 3-digit number.  We have worked on this in class; however, this is a concept that we will have to practice for a LONG time to fully master.  I have sent only two math pages home.  Please take your time to work through the problems with your child.  It will be important for your child to use the same strategy for each problem (ungroup first or expanded method).  Also, they should make sure they have a matching proof drawing.  The proof drawing is a concrete way to see the actual subtraction process.  They just can't forget to show their work numerically as well.  Please do not let these pages be overwhelming or frustrating.  If this is happening at home, let me know and we will finish them at school with some guided help.

November 14: Newsletter

We have had an exciting week here at school!  The students have LOVED playing in the SNOW!  It is hard to believe that we have so much snow already, but it makes for an extra fun time on the playground.  Also, we had a special author visit our classroom on Tuesday.  Mr.  Boss (Mrs. Boss' father-in-law) came in to share his book about Spark and Skip.  His book focuses on developing healthy habits.  The students loved it!  Next week they will be writing ideas for his next book.  Here is a class picture with Mr. Boss.  I have information in class about ordering the book Spark and Skip if you are interested.

October 31: Newsletter

Happy Halloween!!!  We had a GREAT Halloween party!  Thank you to AJ Stanley for organizing the party.  Also, thank you to all the other parents that came to help out.  The students had so much fun!  Pictures from the party will be posted soon!

I am so excited to meet with you at Parent Teacher Conferences next week!  Feel free to come a little early to look through our class books outside of our classroom.  You will also have the opportunity to write your child a note and put it on his/her desk!  They will love the surprise note in the morning.

This week Tuesday, we will begin the Scholastic Reading Counts program (SRC).  Your child will bring home their book bag.  Inside the bag will be a book at their just right level (one of their library books), a bookmark, a letter explaining all the details of SRC, and a reading log.  Please make sure to sign the reading log each night your child reads at home.  Your child will need to read 20 minutes a night/5 days a week.  They will take a quiz on only ONE book a week.  That means when they have read their library book, they can read books from home for the rest of the week.  Library books will still be due on Tuesdays.  If your child is still reading a library book, they can renew that book on Tuesday.  Let me know if you have any questions about SRC.  We will spend a LOT of class time next week practicing all of our SRC routines.

Also, if you are ever cleaning and come across any books your family does not need, our classroom would LOVE to take donations!!!  If you have gently used books which are near a second grade reading level, feel free to drop them off at conferences.  I will have a basket setting outside of our classroom for any donations.  We are always looking for more books to fill our classroom library.  Thank you in advance!

Last thing...I couldn't resist sharing this with you!  During Lead Time this week, we talked about the word KINDNESS.  Students then came up with an acronym for the word KIND.  Here is what the word kind means to them:
K: keep going, keep being a leader, and keep calm
I: inviting, I keep trying, important, imagine, intelligent, and interesting
N: nice, notice if you are doing the right thing, and nice to teachers and parents
D: diligent, different, delightful, and daring

September 26: Newsletter

Here is the newsletter for the week:

Every day we spend time talking about the 7 Habits of Happy Kids in the classroom.  This time of the day is called LEAD TIME.  Yesterday we read a book called Why Am I Here? written by Matthew Kelly.  It was such an amazing book that lead us into a great discussion about leadership.  The main theme throughout the story is to become the best version of yourself by the choices you make.  Many of the students made goals of how to be the best version of themselves today.  Some of their ideas were...empty the dishwasher without being asked, clean my room, and finish my homework before I play.  I love this message and think it is a good reminder for all of us each day.

Why are you here?
"To be the best version of myself!

We had so much fun at the Lead the Way Walk-a-thon!

Your child received a water bottle today after the Walk-a-thon.  You will need to hand wash the water bottles...they are NOT dishwasher safe.
