Parent Handbook

Here is some information about our classroom! You will also receive more information at our Open House!

General Information
This year you will receive weekly newsletters concerning second grade information.  However, they will not be nearly as long as this packet…. thank goodness!  The newsletters will help you become aware of what is going on in the classroom.  There‘s going to be a lot of excitement and I wouldn’t want you to miss a single thing!  I will be posting the newsletter on our classroom blog for you to read on a weekly basis.

Listed below is further information about our classroom and the upcoming year.  Please read through it and if you have any questions, let me know!  It will be so important for us to communicate to make sure your child has a successful experience in second grade!

Communication
Below you will find contact information for the best ways to reach me.  I will try to check my voice messages when I can; however, if you have an urgent message, please leave it with the secretary.  I will return your call as soon as possible.

Special Circumstances
I would appreciate knowing about any special circumstances (sickness or death of a family member, death of a pet, etc.) that you feel may affect your child at school.  Sometimes things that happen outside school cause children to need extra patience and TLC, and I want to take care of your child the best I can.

Friday Folder
This year the students have a Friday Folder.  Each Friday, all the notes from the school and the classroom will come home in the folder.  One side of the folder will hold the papers and information coming directly from the office.  The other pocket will be information from me or papers that your child completed in class.  Your child is to return the Friday Folder to school on Monday.  You may include inside the folder, any items that need to be returned to school.

Special Classes
I have included a specials schedule on our blog and will post it in our weekly newsletter.  This will help you be informed as to whether your child has gym, art, music or STEAM. Please remember to keep a pair of tennis shoes at school for your child to use during gym times. Thank you!

Classroom Climate
This year we will be using the book, 7 Habits of Happy Kids written by Sean Covey to help create our classroom climate.  The 7 habits are:
  1. Be Proactive (You’re in Charge)
  2. Begin with the End in Mind (Have a Plan)
  3. Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
  4. Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win)
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen Before You Talk)
  6. Synergize (Together is Better)
  7. Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best)

We will go over each habit in class and practice the habits daily.  Our classroom discipline system will match these same habits.

Birthdays
If you would like to celebrate a birthday at school, please send a simple treat to share with all classmates.  We promise to make the day special for your child by singing happy birthday and getting V.I.P. status for the day!  If your child has a summer birthday, you may celebrate their “half” birthday during the regular school year!  It is NOT required, but we always love the treats!

Star/Celebrity Student
Each child will have the opportunity to be the Star Student of the week. I will send home a letter explaining the procedure and a special poster they can complete for the following week. They will show the poster to the class on Monday of their special week. We will hang it in the classroom for their friends to see! The class will also make a book for them as a memory of their special week.

Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers are always welcome in our class. In fact, we love them! I will have a sign up sheet at our open house asking for volunteers, looking for when you may be available, and giving you options for what you are most comfortable doing.  If you miss the sign up sheet, please email me to find out more information.
